Wangditse / Trashigang Trails
A gentle forest path winds along the hillside above the capital, opening now and then to reveal the great dzong glinting far below and snow peaks ranged along the horizon.
One of the most accessible hiking trails in Thimphu, the Wangditse Nature Trail is a gentle, mostly level walk through blue-pine forest on the hills above the capital. Often begun near the BBS tower ridge, the path leads to Wangditse Goemba, a peaceful monastery with fine views across the valley to Tashichho Dzong and the mountains beyond. Birdsong, the scent of pine and flurries of prayer flags accompany you, with little climbing to tire the legs. Among the loveliest easy hikes in Bhutan, the Wangditse Trail Thimphu suits walkers of most abilities. Counted among the finest day hikes near Thimphu, it ranks high among relaxed things to do in Thimphu. Plan your route via the official Bhutan Tourism portal: bhutan.travel.
March to May and September to November, when clear skies and mild weather bring out the valley and mountain views.
Wear comfortable shoes and carry water, though the going is easy — start from the Sangaygang/BBS tower area to link the walk with the viewpoint, go in the morning for the clearest mountain views, and check locally on the monastery's current access before setting off.
This attraction can be easily woven into BreakBag Holidays' customised Bhutan tour packages, pairing the Wangditse trail with Sangaygang viewpoint, the Takin Preserve and Thimphu's cultural sights.
