Before any other Ao village existed, there was Ungma — the settlement from which an entire people fanned out across these hills.

Just a few kilometres south of Mokokchung, Ungma village Nagaland is revered as the oldest Ao village — the place where, folklore holds, the Ao Nagas first settled after their ancestral migration. Wander its two great khels, Yimpang and Yimlang, divided by the Ungma Baptist Church rising from the village heart, and you step straight into living Ao Naga culture Mokokchung has kept alive for generations. Carved house-fronts, handwoven shawls and the low memory of log-drums sit easily beside modern life. Time your visit for the Moatsu festival Ungma celebrates each May, and the whole village erupts in feasting, folk song and bonfire-lit community bonding — an unguarded window into the birthplace of the Ao tribe.

Best time to visit: October to April for pleasant weather; early May for the Moatsu festival, or late December for warm Christmas celebrations.

Traveller tip: Knowing how to reach Ungma from Mokokchung is simple — it's barely 10 km, so base yourself in town and take a shared taxi, but ask the village council before photographing the church or ceremonial sites, as Ungma guards its heritage closely.
