Bhutan without the monasteries on the itinerary — just orange orchards, paddy terraces and a town that runs on tea shop conversation.

Tsirang Bhutan is the kingdom's farming heartland, where the high Himalaya softens into warm, terraced ridges of rice, areca palm and mandarin. Damphu Bhutan, the district town, spills down a single sloping street lined with shopfronts run by Lhotshampa (Nepali-speaking) families, and the air carries cardamom, woodsmoke and frying pakora. Below the ridges, the Punatsangchhu draws a green line through the valley floor. What makes it worth stopping is the ordinariness — cattle wandering home at dusk, chillies drying on tin roofs, farmers who wave without wanting anything. Come during Tsirang Tshechu and those quiet fields fill with masked dancers, drums and half the district in kira and gho.

Best time to visit
October to April, with November and December best for the mandarin harvest and clear valley views.

Traveller tip
Treat Tsirang as a halfway halt on the Wangdue–Gelephu highway rather than a day trip — break the drive at Damphu for lunch, then walk up to the ridge above the dzong around 5pm when the light drops across the terraces. Ask before photographing anyone working in the fields; a nod and a smile go a long way here.
