Set on a ridge about 40 km from Kohima, Touphema Tourist Village is one of Nagaland's pioneering community-tourism projects — a faithful recreation of a traditional Angami settlement, built and run by the villagers themselves, with each clan sponsoring a cottage. Stay in a timber hut fitted with quiet modern comforts, then wander the arena, carved archways, viewing tower and museum of textiles, weapons and old artefacts with a local guide who grew up on these stories. Meals lean gloriously local: smoked pork, bamboo-steamed fish, king-chilli heat and gourds of rice beer. Come February, the Angami Sekrenyi purification festival fills the village with ritual, colour and song.

October to April for clear hill weather; late February for the Sekrenyi festival.

The approach road is rough and there's little food beyond the village dining hall, so stay overnight rather than day-tripping — and pre-book your cottage, as Touphema fills completely during Hornbill Festival week.
