Set beside the Wang Chhu river on the northern edge of the capital, Tashichho Dzong is the ceremonial and administrative heart of Bhutan. This grand fortress-monastery houses the throne room and offices of the King, the seat of the government, and the central monastic body, its golden-roofed towers and immaculate courtyards embodying Bhutanese architecture at its most refined. Also spelled Trashi Chhoe Dzong, it comes alive each autumn as the stage for the vibrant Thimphu Tshechu festival, when masked dancers whirl to drums and horns. As a working seat of government, visitor access is limited to certain hours — usually after office hours on weekdays and different timings at weekends — so confirm current times before you go, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and come at dusk to see the dzong beautifully floodlit.
