Tamshing (Tamzhing) Lhakhang

Drape a heavy coat of iron chain-mail over your shoulders and walk it around the chapel — a centuries-old rite said to lighten the soul of its sins, in a temple built by Bhutan's great treasure-revealer.

Set in the sacred Bumthang valley, Tamshing Lhakhang was founded in the early 16th century by Pema Lingpa, Bhutan's revered treasure-revealer and saint-artist. Within, it preserves some of the oldest and most significant religious wall paintings in the country, said to include work by Pema Lingpa's own hand — faded, luminous and deeply atmospheric. Pilgrims come to lift a heavy iron chain-mail suit, reputedly forged by the saint, carrying it clockwise around the temple to cleanse sins and earn merit. Also written Tamzhing Lhakhang Bhutan, this is among the most storied temples in Bhutan. March to May and September to November for pleasant weather; time an autumn trip for the Tamshing Phala Chhoepa festival.

Ask the caretaker about lifting the sacred chain-mail suit for the traditional clockwise circuit, look closely at the ancient murals in the dim light (bring a small torch), dress modestly and remove footwear, and go with a local guide who can share Pema Lingpa's remarkable story.
