Ta Dzong (Trongsa Museum)

Ta Dzong (Trongsa Museum)

Bhutan

From the watchtower that once guarded the great dzong below, the story of Bhutan's kings now unfolds — room by room, portrait by portrait, high above the gorge.

Perched above Trongsa Dzong, the Trongsa Ta Dzong Museum occupies a restored cylindrical watchtower that once defended the fortress against attack. Today, as the Tower of Trongsa Museum, it is dedicated to the Wangchuck dynasty and Bhutan's monarchy, its galleries filled with royal portraits, personal effects, sacred relics and artefacts that trace the nation's history. The spiralling floors reward an unhurried visit, while the tower's elevated setting offers commanding views over the sprawling dzong and the Mangde Chhu gorge beyond. Among the most absorbing museums in Bhutan, Ta Dzong Trongsa opens a window onto Bhutan royal heritage. It ranks high among things to do in Trongsa and places to visit in Trongsa. Plan your visit via the official Bhutan Tourism portal: bhutan.travel.

March to May and September to November for clear skies and the finest views over the dzong and gorge.

Confirm current opening days and hours before you go, allow an hour or two to climb the spiralling galleries, pair the visit with Trongsa Dzong just below for the fuller story, and pause at the tower's windows for standout photographs of the fortress.

This attraction can be easily woven into BreakBag Holidays' customised Bhutan tour packages, pairing the Tower of Trongsa Museum with Trongsa Dzong, Bumthang and central Bhutan's valleys.
