Set at the foot of the Patkai range in remote Phek district, Shilloi Lake is the largest natural lake in Nagaland — a serene sheet of water the Chakhesang call Lütsam, "a place where water is collected." Ringed by towering pines and mist-wrapped hills, it feels lifted from folklore, and indeed the villagers tell of a child found floating at its centre, held aloft by unseen hands, now the guardian queen of the lake. Row a wooden boat across its glassy surface, watch migratory birds — even Siberian cranes — drop in, and soak up a stillness few outsiders ever reach. This is deep-offbeat Nagaland at its most untouched.

October to May for clear skies and good roads; June to September is peak fishing and birdlife, though monsoon roads get rough.

The lake sits near the Indo-Myanmar border, so carry your Inner Line Permit. Roads are long and rough — plan an overnight at the lakeside guest house rather than a punishing day trip, and hire a local driver who knows the Meluri–Phokhungri route.
