Barely three kilometres from Roing town, a mirror-still lake sits cradled in forest so dense the sunlight arrives in fragments — and almost no one outside Arunachal knows it exists.

Sally Lake Roing is a natural lake tucked into the green folds of the Lower Dibang Valley, ringed by thick sub-tropical forest on the edge of the Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary. Sitting on the road up to Mayodia Pass, the lake overlooks the sweeping Dibang Valley, its clear waters flickering with fish and its banks alive with birdsong and the occasional call of hornbills. This is Idu Mishmi country, and a stop here pairs naturally with tribal villages, orange orchards and slow riverside afternoons.
