Climb above a sea of drifting clouds to a summit where the whole of Aizawl spreads at your feet and, on the clearest days, the plains of Bangladesh shimmer far to the west.

Rising to around 1,548 metres just west of the capital, Reiek Peak is one of Mizoram's most rewarding highland escapes. The forested slopes of Reiek Tlang are wrapped in oak, rhododendron and thick bamboo, alive with birdsong and the rustle of mountain breeze. Reiek Peak trekking takes you through cool, mossy woodland before opening onto a rocky crown with sweeping views across ridge after ridge of blue Mizo hills. At the base sits a heritage village of traditional Mizo huts, where the annual Anthurium Festival fills the air with music, dance and the warmth of Mizo hospitality.

Best time to visit: October to March, when skies are clear and the valley views are at their finest.

Traveller tip: Set out early to catch the famous cloud-sea before it lifts, and explore the model Mizo village at the foothill to understand local customs and taste home-style Mizo dishes. Foreign visitors need an Inner Line Permit for Mizoram.
