Where the father and mother rivers meet, a white-and-gold fortress rises like a ship at anchor — and in spring, lilac jacaranda blossoms drift across its ancient walls.

Set at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, Punakha Dzong is widely regarded as the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. Formally called Pungtang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang, it served as the country's ancient capital and seat of government, and still hosts royal weddings and coronations within its sunlit courtyards. Cross the traditional cantilever bridge and you enter a world of soaring whitewashed walls, intricately carved woodwork and richly painted galleries, where the scent of incense drifts from vast prayer halls. In spring, jacaranda trees wreath it in lilac bloom. March to May for the jacaranda blooms and mild weather, or the spring Punakha Tshechu festival for masked dances and colour.

Visit in the morning light when the dzong is at its most photogenic from the bridge, dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered to enter the temples, and time a spring trip for the jacarandas — the lower, warmer Punakha valley is pleasant when Thimphu still feels cold.
