Description

Phuentsholing Bhutan is the kingdom's front door, a border town where the Himalaya finally flattens into the Bengal plains. The Jaigaon Phuentsholing border is the sharpest transition you'll find anywhere in the region: leave the horns and hawkers of Jaigaon, pass beneath the carved Bhutan Gate, and the streets suddenly widen into swept pavements, orderly traffic and quiet shopfronts. Zangtopelri Lhakhang anchors the town centre, prayer wheels turning while pigeons scatter across the courtyard. Above it all, Karbandi Monastery looks back over both countries at once. Eat where the drivers eat — ema datshi, hot chillies and cheese, with red rice.

Best time to visit

October to March, when the humidity drops and the plains stay clear; avoid June to September, when monsoon rain floods the approach roads.

Traveller tip

Cross in the morning and clear your permit formalities before the immigration office queue builds, then walk up to Karbandi Monastery around sunset for the view down over Jaigaon's rooftops. Dress modestly for the lhakhangs, keep hats off inside, and remember that beyond Phuentsholing you'll need an accredited guide for onward travel.
