 Phawngpui Blue Mountain is the highest peak in Mizoram, rising to 2,157 metres and long held sacred by the local Lai people, who believe the spirits of the mountain dwell among its mist-wrapped cliffs. Set within Phawngpui National Park, its slopes are a tapestry of rhododendron blooms, orchids and grassy meadows, home to the elusive clouded leopard, goral and the rare Blyth's tragopan. Trek up through pine and oak forest and you'll emerge to a sweeping panorama where the Chin Hills of Myanmar shimmer on the horizon. The silence here is profound, broken only by birdsong. Among the most rewarding places to visit in Mizoram, Phawngpui rewards those who climb it with a sense of standing at the very edge of the wild.

Best time to visit: October to April, when the skies are clear and the rhododendrons across Phawngpui National Park are in bloom.
