Pfutsero – Nagaland's Highest Town

At nearly 2,150 metres, clouds don't drift past Pfutsero — they pour through its lanes, and on a clear dawn from Glory Peak you can pick out Everest on the horizon.

Perched in Phek district and dominated by the Chakhesang Nagas, Pfutsero is the highest and coldest town in Nagaland — a quiet, mist-wrapped hill station the tourist trail has barely touched. Its crown is Glory Peak, a short hike or drive from town, where a flat summit with a treetop viewpoint opens onto endless ridgelines, Mt Saramati to the east and, on the clearest mornings, distant Everest. Below spread apple orchards and terraced hill farms, and come December the whole town blushes pink with cherry blossom. Wander to the Baptist church, breathe air sharp with frost and pine, and settle into the unhurried rhythm of a place that rewards slowness.

Late September to mid-May for dry, clear weather; December for cherry blossom and frost, and if you love the cold, hard winter mornings.

Traveller tip: Public transport is thin — grab a shared jeep from outside Martyrs' Park in Kohima and book your seat a day ahead. Hike Glory Peak at first light for the Everest view before cloud rolls in, and pack serious warm layers even outside winter.
