Set on a gentle hill in the town of Mongar, Mongar Dzong is one of Bhutan's newer fortresses, dating from the 20th century rather than the 17th like most of its kind. What makes it special is how it was built — entirely by traditional methods, without nails or written blueprints, following techniques passed down through generations. That makes it a fine, accessible window onto how these fortresses have always been raised. Serving as the administrative and religious heart of Mongar, a key waypoint on the east–west road, its courtyards and carved timberwork reward an easy visit. March to May and September to November for pleasant weather; the winter Mongar Tshechu brings masked dances and colour.

As it sits on an easy town hill rather than a steep spur, Mongar Dzong makes a relaxed stop to break the long east–west journey — dress modestly to enter the temples, look closely at the traditional nail-free timberwork, and use Mongar as a base for the onward roads to Lhuentse and the far east.
