Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake)

Legend tells that a saint plunged into this deep gorge pool clutching a butter lamp, and rose again with sacred treasures — his flame still burning — giving the Burning Lake its name.

Tucked into a river gorge in the Tang valley, Mebar Tsho is among the most sacred sites in Bhutan. It is bound to the great treasure-revealer Pema Lingpa, who is said to have dived into its dark waters holding a lit butter lamp and emerged clutching hidden treasures — terma concealed by Guru Rinpoche — with his lamp still aflame. Today the pool is a serene, deep-green stretch of water, its rocks draped with fluttering prayer flags and small offerings, the river murmuring below. Quiet and atmospheric, Mebar Tsho Burning Lake rewards reflection over spectacle. March to May and September to November, when dry, mild weather makes the short walk down to the gorge safe and pleasant.

A short path leads down to the pool, so wear steady shoes and take care on the rocks near the water — go with a local guide who can recount Pema Lingpa's legend, treat the site as the place of pilgrimage it is, and hang a prayer flag as pilgrims do rather than disturbing the offerings.
