Description

Laya Village Bhutan sits at around 3,800 metres in the far north of Gasa district, home to the Layap — a yak-herding community with their own dialect, dress and songs. The women are recognisable anywhere in the country by their conical bamboo hats, worn with a spike at the crown and strung with silver and turquoise. Stone houses scatter across a plateau beneath snow peaks, yaks graze the slopes above, and prayer flags snap in wind that never quite drops. Cordyceps harvested from the high pastures now bring real money into households that were subsistence herders a generation ago.

Best time to visit

Late September to early November, with 23–24 October fixed each year for the Royal Highlander Festival; April to May is the other clear window.

Traveller tip

Give yourself an acclimatisation night at Gasa before going up — Laya sits high enough that arriving straight from Punakha in a day is a poor idea. Your guide needs a valid route permit to present at the Taktsemakha army outpost, so confirm it's arranged before you leave. If you're attempting the full Laya Gasa trek rather than the short route in, budget nine to eleven days and book well ahead; festival week fills every guide and pony in the district. Farmstays with Layap families are the way to do it — accept the yak cheese and the ara when they're offered.
