Legend says a fleeing Ahom king once vanished into these hillside caves to escape his enemies — and the cavern that hid him still stands, waiting to be explored.

Strung along the forested Langpangkong range between the Dikhu and Tzula rivers, the Langpangkong Caves are among Nagaland's most atmospheric attractions — prized less for postcard prettiness than for the stories they hold. Folklore tells of an Ahom king who fled Sivasagar after a royal feud and took refuge deep inside; the very cave said to have sheltered him remains intact and open to visitors. Pick your way through cool, echoing chambers with a local guide, then emerge to sweeping river-valley views and the calls of forest birds. In Ao belief these caves are protectors — sanctuary for anyone or anything in need — which lends the whole place a quiet, watchful magic.

October to April, when trails are dry and the forest and river valleys are at their most walkable.

Base yourself in Mokokchung and hire a local guide near the caves — the chambers are unlit and easy to misjudge, and guides know which passages are safe. Carry a torch, wear grippy shoes, and there's no entry fee.
