Khoma Village (Kishuthara Weaving)

Khoma Village (Kishuthara Weaving)

Bhutan

In nearly every home in this remote village, a woman bends over a backstrap loom, teasing silk into brocade so intricate a single piece can take months — the most treasured cloth in Bhutan.

Tucked into the hills of Lhuentse, Khoma Village is the source of kushuthara — the exquisite brocade silk weaving widely held to be the finest and most valuable textile art in Bhutan. Here weaving is a way of life: in almost every household, women work astonishingly complex patterns on backstrap looms, building a single masterpiece over weeks or months. Reached by a short walk from the road, the village offers a rare chance to watch this painstaking craft up close and buy these treasured pieces directly from the makers. Deeply offbeat and authentic, Khoma Village Lhuentse showcases Kushuthara weaving Bhutan and the country's finest Bhutanese textiles. For kushuthara silk, it is among the most rewarding things to do in Lhuentse and places to visit in eastern Bhutan. Plan your visit via the official Bhutan Tourism portal: bhutan.travel.

March to May and September to November for pleasant weather and comfortable walking to the village.

Reach Khoma on a short walk from the road, and visit homes to watch the backstrap weaving up close — ask politely before photographing the women at work, and note that fine kushuthara is genuinely valuable, so bring sufficient cash if you hope to buy direct from the weavers.

This attraction can be easily woven into BreakBag Holidays' customised Bhutan tour packages, pairing Khoma with Lhuentse Dzong and eastern Bhutan's sights.
