Twenty minutes uphill from the border and you're looking down on two countries at once — Bhutan behind you, the Bengal plains running flat to the horizon.

Description

Kharbandi Gompa sits at around 400 metres on the ridge above Phuentsholing, founded in 1967 by the Royal Grandmother Ashi Phuntsho Choedron. The monastery grounds are small and carefully kept — tropical plants, eight chortens in the Tibetan style, and statues of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and Guru Rinpoche standing among them. Inside, painted panels trace the life of the Buddha across the walls. But the reason most people climb up is the terrace: from this Phuentsholing viewpoint the whole border town lays itself out below, Jaigaon's rooftops beyond it, and on clear winter mornings the plains stretch until they simply dissolve into haze.

Best time to visit

October to February, when the air is dry and visibility over the plains is at its best.

Traveller tip

Come between 7am and 9am — the haze hasn't built yet, the monks are at morning practice, and you'll have the terrace largely to yourself. It's a short taxi ride from town on the Thimphu road, and worth asking your driver to wait rather than hoping to flag one down for the return. Remove hats and shoes before entering the shrine, walk clockwise, and keep your voice down while prayers are underway.
