At the height where the road runs out and the clouds begin, the whole of the Mechuka Valley unfurls at your feet.

Set on a windswept ridge in the Shi-Yomi district, Hanuman Point is the viewpoint that rewards the long climb up the mountain. From here the Mechuka Valley spreads wide below — the silver thread of the Yargyapchu river, patchwork fields, timber Memba homes and, on a clear day, the snow-clad ranges rolling towards the Tibetan frontier. A small shrine and fluttering flags mark the spot, tended in this remote outpost where the air is thin and sharp with pine. There's little sound but the wind and the occasional prayer flag snapping overhead. For travellers seeking the raw, offbeat side of Mechuka, it's the finest vantage in the valley and a quiet moment worth the effort.

Best time to visit

October to April, when clear skies open the full sweep of the valley and the distant peaks stand crisp against the blue.

Traveller tip

Time your visit for early morning before the cloud rolls in — the light is softest and the views the widest; carry a windcheater, as the exposed ridge turns bitterly cold even under sun.
