Hanging / Cane & Bamboo Bridges

Woven entirely by hand from cane and bamboo, these swaying bridges have carried the tribes of Arunachal across roaring rivers for generations.

The cane and bamboo bridges of Arunachal Pradesh are living heirlooms of Adi and Galo engineering — no nails, no steel, just cane, bamboo and inherited skill lashed into a structure that flexes underfoot as the river thunders below. Crossing a hanging bridge in Arunachal Pradesh is a small act of trust: the deck bounces, the cane creaks, and through the gaps in the bamboo mesh you glimpse the green-blue current racing past. The Siang and Siyom hanging bridges near Aalo are the finest to walk — roughly 70 metres of woven span connecting villages of different sub-tribes. Rebuilt communally every few years, each bridge is less a structure than a ritual, binding people to river and to one another.

Best time to visit

October to April, when the rivers run clearer and the bamboo decks stay dry and firm underfoot.

Traveller tip

Avoid the monsoon months (June–September), when the planks and bamboo mesh turn slippery — and wear sturdy, high-grip footwear whatever the season. Cross one person at a time, move slowly, and pause midway: the view straight down the river valley is the whole reason to be there.
