Dzuleke – A Trout Stream and 30-Odd Houses in the Hills

Dzuleke – A Trout Stream and 30-Odd Houses in the Hills

Nagaland India

No mobile signal, no crowds — just a cold river full of rainbow trout, woodsmoke on the breeze, and a handful of Angami homes tucked into forest the villagers chose to leave wild.

About 40 km from Kohima and a scenic 18 km beyond Khonoma, Dzüleke village Nagaland is one of the state's most disarming eco-tourism escapes — barely three dozen households of Angami Nagas, ringed by rainforest they've protected by banning hunting and logging. The clear Dzüleke river threads through it, home to rare snow and rainbow trout and a small community breeding centre. Wander stone walkways past flower-draped patios, take an easy riverside walk, watch weavers and basket-makers at work, and taste fiery bhoot jolokia straight from the fields. Birdcalls and rushing water are the only soundtrack. This is deep, digital-detox Nagaland — a place to slow all the way down.

October to April for clear skies and pleasant walks; February brings the Angami Sekrenyi festival.

Register your vehicle and picnic spot and pay the small fee at the DETB office — it funds upkeep — and carry everything out with you. Book a village homestay to experience dawn on the river, and don't rely on phone signal; there isn't any.

Plan your visit via Nagaland Tourism.

This offbeat village pairs naturally with Khonoma and slots into BreakBag Holidays' customised Nagaland tour packages for travellers craving quiet and nature.
