Dzükou Valley

Dzükou Valley

Nagaland India

Cross one last ridge and the forest suddenly falls away into a rolling green ocean of dwarf bamboo — and for a few monsoon weeks, a carpet of lilies that grow nowhere else on earth.

Straddling the Nagaland–Manipur border at around 2,450 metres, the Dzükou Valley trek is Northeast India's most distinctive walk — less a summit push than a slow entry into an impossibly wide, soft-sloped meadow. Between June and September the floor bursts into the valley of flowers of Nagaland: the rare Dzükou Lily, aconites and rhododendrons splashing colour across the hills. Come the cooler months it trades bloom for stillness — frost-tipped grass, mist curling through the hollows, and star-drenched skies above the valley rest house. Climb from Viswema or Zakhama, camp overnight, and wake to a landscape that feels wholly untouched by time.

Best time to visit: June to September for the flowers (peak bloom early July); November to March for crisp, clear trekking weather.

Traveller tip: There's no lodging inside the valley beyond a basic rest house, so carry a tent and book ahead — and pack warm layers plus a rain shell even in summer. Carry every scrap of waste back out; the community keeps Dzükou strictly plastic-free.
