At the head of the Paro valley stands a fortress reborn — its massive whitewashed walls rising once more from ruins that guarded Bhutan for three centuries.

Set roughly 14 kilometres north of Paro town, Drukgyel Dzong Paro is among the most storied of all dzongs in Bhutan. Built in 1649 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal to commemorate victory over a Tibetan-Mongol invasion, the dzong was destroyed by fire in 1951 and stood as a preserved ruin for seventy years. A full reconstruction, guided by early-20th-century photographs and traditional building knowledge, has since been under way, and its commanding walls now rise again above the valley. On a clear day the site offers a rare direct view of Mount Jomolhari, Bhutan's most sacred peak, making Drukgyel Dzong Bhutan among the more evocative historical places in Bhutan. March to May and September to November, when clear skies bring out the Jomolhari views behind the fortress.

The exterior is largely complete and makes for an imposing sight, but the interior remains closed to visitors as restoration continues — entry is currently free, so walk the short rise for photographs from the vantage points and time your visit for a cloudless morning when Jomolhari is out.
