At dusk the sky over the Doyang darkens — not with cloud, but with a million wings, as the world's greatest gathering of falcons wheels down to roost.

Deep in Wokha district, where the Doyang river swells into a vast reservoir, lies one of conservation's great redemption stories. Every autumn, up to a million Amur falcons descend on Doyang reservoir Wokha to rest on their epic migration from Siberia to Africa — the single largest roosting congregation on earth, earning this stretch the title Falcon Capital of the World. The nearby Pangti village Nagaland once hunted these raptors in their thousands; today its people guard them fiercely, patrolling roosts and running homestays for visitors who come to witness the spectacle. Stand on a hillside at sunset as the Amur falcon Nagaland skies fill wingtip to wingtip, the air alive with calls — a genuinely humbling sight, and a village that changed its heart.

Best time to visit: Mid-October to late November for the Amur falcon migration season — early November is peak, with the birds gone by December.
