Set beside the Kulong Chhu river in Trashiyangtse, Chorten Kora is a large white stupa modelled on Kathmandu's Boudhanath, yet wholly its own in the far east of Bhutan. Local legend tells of a young girl from across the Arunachal border who is said to have willingly entered the stupa to be entombed in an act of devotion — a moving story still honoured here. Each spring, the Chorten Kora festival fills the grounds as pilgrims, including Dakpa people from the nearby borderlands, circumambulate the dome in prayer.
