Cheri Monastery (Chagri)

Cheri Monastery (Chagri)

Bhutan

Cross a wooden bridge over a rushing river, climb through whispering pine, and a white monastery emerges on the mountainside — the very place where monastic Bhutan was born.

At the head of the Thimphu valley, Cheri Monastery is among the most historically significant monasteries in Bhutan. Established in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was here that he founded the country's first monastic body, seeding the spiritual order that shapes Bhutan to this day. Reaching it means a rewarding climb — a traditional bridge over the Wang Chhu, then a forest path winding uphill past prayer flags and birdsong to the quiet, whitewashed retreat above. Still an active meditation centre, Chagri Monastery Bhutan rewards the effort with serenity and sweeping valley views. Among the more memorable things to do in Thimphu, Cheri Monastery Thimphu is one of the finest places to visit near Thimphu. Plan your route via the official Bhutan Tourism portal: bhutan.travel.

March to May and September to November, when clear skies and mild weather make the forest climb most pleasant.

The Cheri Monastery hike takes roughly an hour uphill each way, so wear sturdy shoes and carry water — set out in the morning, keep quiet near meditating monks, dress modestly to enter the shrines, and watch for grazing takin on the lower slopes.

This attraction can be easily woven into BreakBag Holidays' customised Bhutan tour packages, pairing Cheri Monastery with Tashichho Dzong, Buddha Dordenma and Thimphu's cultural sights.
