Established in 1620 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was here that he founded the country's first monastic body, seeding the spiritual order that shapes Bhutan to this day. Reaching it means a rewarding climb — a traditional bridge over the Wang Chhu, then a forest path winding uphill past prayer flags and birdsong to the quiet, whitewashed retreat above.
