Perched at around 1,950 metres in remote Peren district, Benreu village Nagaland is a traditional Zeliang settlement and one of the state's finest eco-tourism bases — a quiet cluster of bamboo homes under the gaze of Mount Pauna. Mist pours through daily, rice terraces shimmer in the foothills, and the river below traces the Nagaland–Manipur line. The moderate Mount Pauna trek climbs through virgin forest along the rhododendron and orchid trail Pauna is famed for, alive with birdsong, opening to panoramas that reach toward the Dzükou Valley and Manipur. As the third highest peak in Nagaland, Pauna rewards every step. Best time to visit: October to April for clear trekking and mountain views; late October brings the Zeliang Lamsimnyi festival.
