Baktawng Village — Home of the World's Largest Family
On a hillside in central Mizoram stands a four-storey house that once sheltered nearly 200 people under a single roof — one family, one extraordinary story.
Set in the hills of the Serchhip district, Baktawng Village is known across the world as the home of the Chana family, widely reported as the world's largest family. At its heart is a striking multi-storey residence, built to house the vast household of the late Ziona Chana and the Chana Pawl community he led. The self-sufficient household ran its own school and grew its own crops, functioning almost like a village within a village. Though Ziona Chana passed away in 2021, Baktawng Tlangnuam remains one of the more remarkable places to visit in Mizoram, drawing curious travellers to glimpse this singular way of communal life. Baktawng Village Mizoram is best approached with genuine respect for the people who call it home. Plan your route via the official Mizoram Tourism portal: tourism.mizoram.gov.in. pressreader
October to March, when cool, dry weather makes the drive through central Mizoram most comfortable.
This is a living home, not a monument, so treat the Chana family Mizoram with courtesy — go with a local guide who can arrange an appropriate visit, always ask before photographing people or the house, and keep your presence quiet and respectful.
This attraction can be easily woven into BreakBag Holidays' customised Mizoram tour packages, pairing Baktawng with the towns, weavers and viewpoints of central Mizoram.
