Cross a swaying cane bridge over the Yomgo and you arrive somewhere that runs on a older clock, where the day is measured by riverlight and woodsmoke.
Description
Set a short drive from Aalo in Arunachal Pradesh's West Siang district, Bagra and Darka villages are Galo settlements built along the confluence country of the Sipu and Yomgo rivers. Bamboo houses stand on stilts above kitchen gardens; the air carries woodsmoke, fermenting apong and the low hum of Donyi-Polo prayer, the faith that honours sun and moon. Darka, one of the largest villages in the district, opens onto forest and river crossings that are still walked rather than driven. There is no ticket counter here and no performance staged for visitors — only a working village where the loom, the paddy terrace and the shared cup set the rhythm of the day.
Best time to visit
October to April, with early April best of all for the Mopin harvest festival and the Yomgo River Festival at Aalo.
Traveller tip
Cross the cane suspension bridge in the early morning when mist is still lifting off the Yomgo — the light is at its best and the bridge is quiet before the school crowd. Always ask before photographing homes or people, and if you're offered apong, accept with both hands. Refusing outright reads as a slight.
