Aizawl — The Hilltop Capital of Mizoram
Perched along a serpentine ridge nearly 1,100 metres above sea level, Aizawl greets you with rooftops tumbling down the hillsides and clouds drifting straight through the streets.
Aizawl is a city that lives on the spine of a mountain, its houses clinging to steep slopes and its lanes climbing and dipping with the terrain. Mornings arrive with mist pooling in the valleys below and the sound of church bells rolling across the ridges — a reminder of the deeply musical, close-knit Mizo culture that defines this place. Wander through Bara Bazaar, where handwoven puanchei shawls, fresh bamboo shoot and steaming Mizo thali fill the air with colour and aroma. Come evening, the hillsides flicker to life with thousands of lights, and panoramic viewpoints reveal ridgeline after ridgeline fading into the blue Lushai Hills. Among the many places to visit in Aizawl, it's this rhythm of hill, faith and community that stays with you.
Best time to visit: October to March, when the skies are clear and the panoramic views are at their finest.
Traveller tip: Head up to Durtlang Hills just before sunset for the widest sweep over the city — the lights coming on across the slopes are unforgettable, and it stays far quieter than the central viewpoints.
